The Heptanesian Approach To Searching For The Perfect Apartment

Recently I have been getting emails from a reader (Sonali) of the Heptanesian Chronicles on how to search for an apartment here in my native Mumbai. I have actually written a lengthy reply in an email to Sonali, but thought I’ll share this here on my blog.

From Sonali, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: “I really like your blog post on meditation (read this if you have missed it), and am thinking of moving to Mumbai for a short while to check out some of the places you mentioned. Can you tell me what are the best ways to search for the perfect apartment or condominium in Mumbai?”

My Answer to Sonali

If you have plans to move or are currently looking for your “temporary” home here in Mumbai, there are various methods that you can learn on how to search for the perfect apartment for your needs.

Some of the options available out there would include searching for an apartment online or using an apartment locator to walk or drive around your neighborhood. Learning how to search for the perfect apartment in a good part of town that provides the amenities that you need and fits your personal budget really isn’t that hard if you know how the general process works – believe it.

Here are several effective methods that you can use on how to search for the perfect apartment, just in case you need them:

  • Hire a Broker.

If you want to learn how to search for the perfect apartment in a major city, then you have the choice to hire a real estate broker to help you out. If you already know which neighborhood you want to live in and what that neighborhood is like, though, then it would be best to look for a broker who already works in that area since he is sure to know more about the area and what you can find there on your budget.

The majority of brokers in today’s day and age tend to have websites that will let you go online to view the latest available apartments that you can rent and they usually come with pictures and complete descriptions, too. Naturally, you will have to do some research on the broker that you plan on hiring first, though, since these services aren’t exactly cheap. As such, you want to make sure that you at least get an experienced, knowledgeable and licensed provider for your money.

  • Get Personal Recommendations.

You can find your dream apartment but you must do your due diligence first.

If you would rather avoid paying the expensive fees that come with a broker, you may want to ask friends, colleagues or relatives for recommendations on apartments that you can rent instead. Various people have actually succeeded at finding apartments through this method and the best part is that you won’t have to shell out a single cent for it. You can even walk or drive around the area that you are interested in to look for “For Rent” signs instead, if you want. Also, some websites are also good for recommendations. When I was moving to Kuala Lumpur back in 2004, I was looking for some recommendations on KLCC condominiums which led me to the KLCCCondominiums.com.my website. Click here to see what I mean.

  • Use Apartment Locators.

Apartment locators happen to be very fast and very efficient services that can help you find local apartments that you can rent with ease. The majority of these locators can even give you access to a huge database of potential places to rent in your area of choice. You will also have an easy time viewing properties through these services that are tailored to your personal needs.

  • Look Through Classified Ads.

One very common method that you can use on how to search for the perfect apartment would be to look through classified ads in community papers, local papers, message boards or online websites. Nowadays, a lot of local papers actually feature certain areas on their website where they list recent classified ads, as well, so you can get the most updated listings whenever you need them.
